For the first time ever the Premier League will make more money from TV deals outside the UK than inside
Premier League bosses have built on the success of renewing their domestic TV rights deal by signing contracts with overseas distributors which will see them generate more TV money from abroad than from inside the UK for the first time ever.
Back in May the Premier League agreed to renew its existing £5bn deal with broadcasters Sky, BT, Amazon and the BBC, allowing them to continue showing matches between 2022 and 2025. At a moment when leagues around the world were taking major hits on their domestic TV revenue, largely due to the coronavirus pandemic, this was seen as a big win the league.
Richard Masters and his fellow executives at the Premier League have since trumped that by signing overseas rights deals which will accumulatively generate more money than that £5bn deal signed last year, signalling an historic moment for English football.
For the first time the English Premier League will now make more money selling its product around the world than it does within the UK itself, providing further evidence of the global brand which the league has become.
The new figure for international rights will reach £5.05bn, just beating out that of the domestic rights, also representing a 30% increase in value when compared to the £3.89bn they gained between 2019 and 2022 for the same thing.
To be clear, the Premier League has managed to tread water in the domestic rights market while growing its international TV revenues by more than a quarter, during a global pandemic which has caused untold financial issues for most other leagues in the world. The only other major European league which has grown in value during the coronavirus pandemic is La Liga.
This increased income will largely be enjoyed by the 20 Premier League clubs, with money also filtering down throughout the English football pyramid. These funds are sure to put the teams in the division in an even greater position of strength going into transfer markets during the coming seasons.
It's been a fantastic period of time for the league and the clubs as money just keeps pouring in with no sign of stopping.
