From 1992 to 2014, Alan Hansen was a renowned pundit and an iconic figure on BBC's Match of the Day (MOTD)

Football is a sport that has seen many greats, but few have managed to transcend their playing days and become an authority in the sport. One such individual is Alan Hansen, a Liverpool legend and defensive maestro who later became one of football’s most respected voices. His contributions to football and broadcasting have now been recognised with an MBE.

Hansen's career at Liverpool was nothing short of remarkable. Over 14 years, he became the linchpin of one of the club's most dominant sides. His journey began when he was signed from Partick Thistle in 1977, and he quickly rose to prominence as a key figure under Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan, and Kenny Dalglish.

During his tenure at Anfield, he won eight First Division titles, three European Cups, and two FA Cups. His leadership skills were invaluable—composed on the ball, decisive in defence, and a captain who commanded respect.

Transition into broadcasting

Retirement did not mark the end for Hansen; instead it marked a new beginning as he transitioned seamlessly into punditry. From 1992 to 2014, he became a cornerstone of BBC’s Match of The Day programme where his incisive analysis set new standards for football broadcasting.

One memorable moment came in 1995 when he famously remarked "You can't win anything with kids". These words would later haunt him as Manchester United's young side went on to lift the Premier League title that season.

Recognition for an iconic figure

Now aged 69 years old, Hansen received his MBE at Windsor Castle—a fitting tribute for his immense contributions to football both on and off the pitch. Despite facing serious health scares last summer which resulted in him spending two weeks in hospital before being discharged home for recovery, his impact on Liverpool and football remains undiminished.

Liverpool fans will always cherish Hansen—not just for his elegance on the pitch, but also for his insightful analysis off it. His MBE is a deserved honour for a true great of the game, marking an illustrious career that has left an indelible mark on football and broadcasting.
