In a significant development in English football, Manchester United legends David Beckham and Gary Neville have taken over League Two club, Salford City FC. This move marks a new era for the Ammies, with the duo forming part of an influential consortium that includes US businessman Declan Kelly and Lord Mervyn Davies.
The consortium has reportedly raised between $15-20 million to fuel their ambitious plans of propelling Salford City FC to championship status within five years. This war chest signifies their commitment to transforming the club's fortunes and making it a formidable force in English football. Prior to this takeover, Beckham and Neville were involved with other stars from Manchester United's famous Class of '92 - Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, and Phil Neville. However, it appears that their shares have now been bought out by the new ownership group.
Despite this change in ownership structure, Butt, Giggs, Scholes and Phil Neville will continue contributing to Salford City FC’s journey through various roles across technical aspects of football operations as well as commercial activities. They will also be involved in recruitment processes at the club along with contributing towards initiatives under the banner of Salford City Football Club Foundation.
Bold vision for Salford City FC
David Beckham expressed his excitement about this new venture on social media stating how important role Salford played in his life growing up. He reminisced about training with United alongside his best mates every day at Salford where he also bought his first house.
David Beckham, Manchester United legend, said:
“Salford played such an important role in my life growing up…
“It’s where I trained with United alongside my best mates every day, it’s where I bought my first house and where Victoria and I lived. I’m so proud to be part of a new ownership group alongside my mate Gary Neville as we begin the next chapter of Salford’s journey. Football is at the heart of this community, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for the Ammies.”
The Class of '92 had big plans for Salford City FC from the start when they got involved in 2014. They successfully took the club from the Northern Premier League North to League Two, achieving four promotions in five years.
Despite narrowly missing out on another promotion this year under Karl Robinson's stewardship, there is a sense of optimism about what lies ahead. The club has plateaued slightly in League Two, but with Beckham and Neville at the helm and a significant war chest at their disposal, it seems that exciting times are ahead for Salford City FC.
