Gary Lineker, a renowned name in English football and television, has confirmed his future plans after announcing his departure from the BBC's Match of the Day. The former England striker will step down as host at the end of the 2024-25 Premier League season before leaving BBC altogether following next year's World Cup.
Lineker, aged 64, has stated that he does not anticipate joining another TV company after his contract with BBC ends in 2026. He revealed having held talks with Sky Sports but chose to remain loyal to BBC. This decision reflects Lineker’s commitment towards maintaining long-term professional relationships.
Gary Lineker, BBC Pundit, said:
"We've had talks with Sky at various points, but I always wanted to stick with the BBC. I could have earned a lot more, though I know I've been well paid anyway, obviously. I've had offers to go elsewhere but I just loved being with the BBC, and also how it helps everything else you do.
"It's not only the kudos, the audience is much bigger. More people still watch Match of the Day than probably the biggest live game on Sundays. Also, I'm quite loyal. I've had the same guy cut my hair for 40 years, the same guy training me in the gym for 30 years, the same agent since I was 18."
Glorious journey with Match of The Day
Lineker is set to present Match of the Day for one last time this May. He has been hosting this Premier League highlights show since August 1999 and will continue leading their coverage of FA Cup throughout the 2025-26 season before ending his remarkable 27-year stint with BBC at next year’s World Cup final in USA.
It is noteworthy that Lineker hasn't solely worked for BBC during these years. Between 2015 and 2021, he presented Champions League football for BT Sport. However, he severed ties with BT so that he could travel Europe with his sons and watch hometown club Leicester compete in Europa League during subsequent seasons.
No regular appearances on other channels after 2026
Despite interest from Sky Sports – a platform where some biggest names in English football have worked – don’t expect regular appearances from Lineker on any other channel post-2026.
Gary Lineker added:
"I don't think you'll see me doing much football, apart from the podcast [The Rest Is Football]. I'll do the odd thing, but I don't think you'll see me appearing regularly on another channel."
While fans may be disappointed by Gary Lineker's decision to step away from regular television appearances after leaving 'Match Of The Day', they can look forward to enjoying his insightful commentary and analysis for a few more seasons. His loyalty to BBC and dedication towards his personal life are commendable, making him not just an exceptional sports presenter but also a role model off the field.
