JioCinema registered more engagement compared to Star Sports

Since the start of season 16th on 31st March, the Indian Premier League has started making noise. New experiences and new records have been sparked by the new season.

With the digital and television rights of IPL held by two separate companies, IPL has entered a new era in broadcasting.

It was anticipated that the first week would mark a benchmark for both platforms, but the industry is grappling with a dilemma as a result of the first week's numbers.

IPL 2023, the fourth-most expensive league in the world, recorded the second-lowest TV viewership on its opening day between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super King compared to the past six seasons. However, digital viewing registered a record-breaking number with huge changes among digital users.

During the opening match, Star Sports recorded a TVR of 7.29, a sharp drop from the 8.25 television rating in 2021 and 10.36 in 2020.

Compared to the past six seasons, engagement was about 33 per cent, which is the second lowest. BARC's percentage also dropped to 22 per cent from 23 per cent.

Star Sports had more success on the ad revenue front

Star Sports reported ad revenues of Rs 2,200 crore ahead of IPL 2023, while Jio reported ad revenues of Rs 1,400 crore. However, JioCinema had a huge success in broadcasting numbers as it recorded an astounding opening day audience.

Over 2.5 crore downloads of JioCinema were recorded on the first day of the match, making it the most downloaded app in a single day.

Additionally, over 6 crore unique viewers tuned in for the GT vs CSK match, which reached 1.6 crore concurrent viewers on the platform and 5.6 crores on Star Sports.

Though Jio did not fare well in the IPL over viewership, the company still has a win-win as it owns the rights to the TATA WPL, which has the highest viewing numbers for any women's tournament in history.

Over 10 million new viewers tuned in to the Mumbai Indians-Delhi Capitals final clash of the inaugural season.
