The length of Serie A media tender has been changed to five years

The Serie A media rights tender is set to be unpacked after the green signal from AGCOM, the Italian communications regulator. The decision regarding the tenure of the media rights deal was only hanging in detail before the AGCOM meeting but now things are now set to unravel.

This season marks the expiration of Serie A's current media deal with DAZN and Sky Italia. In December, AGCOM passed guidelines for new media rights deals that were to last three years, but more recent guidelines overruled those guidelines for five years.

However, the new amendments will contain similar content to the last one with no major changes.

AGCOM released a statement where they said:

“The Authority’s observations focused on the profile of the extension of the licenses for five years, noting the need to consider the potential of the rights packages in the marketing phase, both by expanding the rights of the licensees from a technological, editorial, and commercial point of view, and by foreseeing possible new licensees.

“This is also in light of possible innovative ways of using the content that may arise.”

Italian Government has also stamped their approval

In addition, the Italian government has approved AGCOM's proposal since the previous proposal of three years was not well received by media outlets.

Additionally, the new five-year guidelines allow Serie A domestic rights to be aligned with overseas rights regulations as well.

Managing director of DAZN, Stephen Azzi also reflected on the new amendment from AGCOM and said:

“We are convinced that we can play our cards. Especially since the period of validity has rightly been increased from 3 to 5 years and this allows for be able to plan better your own investments”

DAZN and Sky Sports had a previous deal worth €2.5 billion, so it will be interesting to see if the number rises or if the departure of big names like Cristiano Ronaldo will impact it.
