The Football Association (FA) and the Northern Premier League (NPL) are currently investigating an alleged incident involving NPL chairman, Mark Harris. The investigation was prompted by an abusive email that Harris allegedly sent to a FC United of Manchester fan. This controversy arose following a contentious decision to change the venue for a crucial end-of-season game.
Aled Duckfield, an FC United fan, emailed Harris expressing his dissatisfaction with the NPL's decision to relocate FC United's match against Stockton Town. Originally scheduled at Broadhurst Park on 21 April, the match was moved to nearby Curzon Ashton due to persistent pitch issues at Broadhurst Park.
In his email, Duckfield described this decision as "diabolical" and accused the NPL of "incompetence" and a "lack of governance". He expressed shock when he received what he claims was an abusive response from Harris. Harris has not commented on these allegations but reportedly reported himself to the FA.
Impact on FC United’s title chances
FC United argues that moving their match against Stockton could jeopardize their title chances - they would ascend to first place if they win their game in hand - and also significantly impact them financially. The club lost at Broadhurst Park against title rival Hednesford Town recently and have another league match scheduled against Hyde United on 18 April which has not been relocated.
FA released statement:
"We can confirm that we are investigating this matter. As this is an ongoing process, we are not in a position to provide further comment."
The NPL maintains that they cannot afford any further postponements given that the season ends on 25 April. They argue that this outstanding game holds significant implications for both title contention and play-off scenarios.
NPL released statement:
"Following a reported communication between chairman Mark Harris and a member of the public, the League can confirm it is actively investigating this serious matter, with an urgent meeting convened for Friday morning."
FC United proposed conducting a pitch inspection at Broadhurst Park one day before their game with Stockton Town. If deemed unplayable or risky, they suggested switching the venue. However, this proposal was rejected by NPL.
Despite the ongoing investigation, it's important to note that Harris is a highly respected figure within football circles. He was appointed as NPL chairman in 2009 and also serves on the FA's National Leagues Pyramid Board. The outcome of this investigation could have significant implications for both Harris and FC United. As sports fans and sports betting enthusiasts await further developments, it is hoped that all parties involved will act in the best interest of fair play and good governance.
