Liverpool Football Club have announced that Andy Robertson, the 32-year-old Scottish defender, will be leaving the club when his contract expires at the end of this season. Robertson joined Liverpool in 2017 from Hull City for a fee of £8m. During his tenure on Merseyside, he has won two Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy. Reflecting on his time with the club, Robertson stated: "The nine years I'll look back on with a big smile on my face."
Despite being targeted by Spurs during the January transfer window and an agreement in principle between both clubs, Liverpool decided not to proceed due to their inability to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma.
This season under head coach Arne Slot, Robertson's first-team opportunities have been limited due to the arrival of Hungarian left-back Milos Kerkez. Kerkez was signed last year from Bournemouth for £40m and has since become a regular starter. Despite starting only six top-flight games this campaign and spending more time on the bench than usual, Robertson expressed hope that supporters are "proud of the left-back they're seeing perform week in, week out".
Andy Robertson, Liverpool player, said:
"This club means everything to me, the fans mean everything to me, the people connected to the club mean everything to me. I think I owe it to them still to, until my very last day, I'll give everything to this football club, which I've done over the last nine years and I'm very proud of that.
"The time to have the emotional farewell and tell the fans and the people connected to this club what they mean to me, that will come closer to the end. I don't think I'm quite ready for that yet."
During his stint at Anfield, he made 373 appearances for Liverpool and helped secure nine trophies.
Challenging season for Liverpool
Currently fifth in Premier League standings, Liverpool is set to face Fulham at Anfield this Saturday. This season has proven challenging for Slot's side; following a 4-0 FA Cup quarter-final defeat by Manchester City last weekend was another loss - this time against Paris St-Germain (2-0) - in Champions League quarter-finals.
The announcement about Robertson’s departure comes shortly after Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah also confirmed he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of this season.
While Robertson's departure marks the end of an era for Liverpool, it also opens up new opportunities for both the player and the club. As fans bid farewell to one of their favourite left-backs, they can also look forward to seeing how Liverpool evolves in its next chapter.
