OTT platform annual review shows an increase in streaming time and connected devices in 2022
London-based, global sports streaming platform DAZN has become the largest online sports broadcaster in Europe and the highest grossing app in sports during 2022, according to figures released in its 2022 annual review.
The review credits DAZN with having achieved 1.2bn hours of global streaming time across 130m devices last year. These numbers were up from 1bn hours and 100m devices in 2021.
These results now make DAZN the biggest digital sports broadcaster in all of Europe.
Alongside very positive streaming statistics, DAZN can now boast a total of 15m premium paying subscribers around the world.
These successes have largely been achieved through the acquisiton of an array of sports broadcast rights, including the 75 new rights it acquired during 2022.
The live streaming giant, owned by American-British business tycoon Len Blavatnik, is now present in 225 markets. Starting out as the online home of boxing, it has gone on to become an integral part of the larger sports broadcasting landscape in several key territories including Italy, Spain and Germany.
The company made huge waves when it became the exclusive domestic rights holder for the Italian Serie A some years back, and continues to make football its priority. It followed that up by snatching those of La Liga in Spain and the Bundesliga in Germany.
Despite an unsuccessful attempt to buy out BT Sport, and subsequently take control of its Premier League broadcasting rights - the holy grail for any broadcaster looking to get into football - DAZN still remains a key player in the world of football rights, and is only expected to grow in stature in the coming years.
Shay Segev, CEO at DAZN, commented on the report:
"The past twelve months have been a highly significant period for DAZN as we look to become the ultimate daily destination for sports fans. We have experienced healthy growth across our markets, added a significant volume of global and domestic rights to the platform, and substantially increased our revenues by adjusting our core offerings and exploring new revenue streams. Looking forward, we have a clear plan in place to deliver the next phase of DAZN's progress. Our focus will be on making the product more accessible, removing further friction and improving customer engagement. We are excited for what the future holds."
DAZN Chairman of the Board of Directors, Kevin Mayer, said: "DAZN Group has gone from strength to strength over the past year. Driven by a highly experienced new senior leadership team drawn from across technology, media, telecommunications, entertainment and sport, the business has proven the potential of an innovative direct-to-consumer sports offering. With these solid foundations in place, we are in a strong position as we enter 2023."
DAZN will likely remain a huge player in the world of football live streaming in the years to come.
