The Indian broadcaster will continue to show English top flight matches until the end of the 2024/25 season
The English Premier League has successfully renewed its broadcasting deal with Star India. The provider will have access to all 380 matches per season until 2025. This latest agreement is an extension of the existing contract which will expire at the end of this campaign. Star India, which is owned by Disney, will continue to bring the league to fans across the Indian subcontinent, including India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan and The Maldives. Fixtures will be shown on Star Sports and Disney+ Hotstar.
According to Inside Sport, this latest deal is worth 25% less than the previous one and contributes to a trend which has seen the value of Premier League broadcast rights in the region fall by almost 65% during the last three rights cycles. The exact financial details are unknown but the agreement is said to represent another significant drop off for the English top flight in those countries.
Sanjog Gupta, Head of Sports at Disney Star said of the deal: "We are delighted to continue our association with the Premier League and look forward to the collaboration over the next three seasons. With Premier League and the Indian Super League, we are home to the two most popular football leagues in India and will continue our endeavour to grow football fandom in the country."
Paul Molnar, the Premier League’s chief media officer, also said: “The Premier League is delighted to announce an extension of our exciting association with Disney Star. They will be an outstanding home for the Premier League over the next three seasons and we look forward to working together to showcase the league to new and existing fans throughout the Indian subcontinent.”
No big deal for the Premier League
Despite the disappointment of seeing the value of the brand's TV rights fall in India and surrounding countries, executives will be pleased at the progress made more generally. It has been recently reported that for the first time ever international broadcast revenue will be worth more to the Premier League than domestic. The league will bring in more than £5bn from TV rights deals signed internationally.
Premier League cuts ties with Russia
This news comes in the wake of the Premier League ditching their TV rights deal with Russian broadcasters Rambler and Match TV. Existing and upcoming contracts have been terminated as the league shows solidarity with the victims of the war in Ukraine. Similar moves are being made by other sporting organisations, companies and brands as they attempt to distance themselves from the Putin regime.
