The public broadcaster will continue to provide live audio commentary for Premier League matches until 2024/25

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has once again won the rights to live audio commentary of the Premier League for the next three full seasons, continuing its existing relationship with the English top flight.

Flagship sports station BBC Radio 5 Live has won the rights to four out of seven packages offered for the next three campaigns.

The deal allows 5 Live to present live audio commentary of Premier League matches and gives them the choice of first pick of one 15:00 Saturday kick off and the 17:30 Saturday offering.

The BBC will also be providing the soundtrack to the 14:00 and 16:30 matches on Sundays too. The corporation will also continue to commentate on two of the four midweek rounds.

Barbara Slater, Director of BBC Sport said:

“As we approach the end of another vintage Premier League campaign, we are delighted to confirm our live audio rights deal for the next three seasons. With more Premier League commentaries than any other UK broadcaster, BBC Radio 5 Live will remain the home of Premier League football.”

Coverage of live Premier League football represents the bedrock of 5 Live's football content, which also contains multiple podcasts like Football Daily and the 606 Football Phone-In. The station also covers other sports via live commentary like cricket and boxing.

Executives at The Beeb are sure to be very happy about picking up those rights and maintaining their position as the place to be for top quality audio coverage of the world's most popular league.

The news comes after it was announced which matches at the Qatar World Cup the BBC would be showing on live television. The rest of 2022 will contain tonnes of football action on the BBC.

Perhaps the most iconic part of the BBC's football coverage is its Match of the Day highlights show, which airs every Saturday night. MOTD is a staple of the English football fan's weekly diet and a huge part of the football culture in the nation. Presenter Gary Lineker had been rumoured to be stepping down, but he hilariously quashed those rumours a few days ago when he said:

"Getting a number of texts from friends asking if I'm quitting @BBCMOTD after reports on Twitter of my possible successor. So it's only fair I give you the bad news now: I'm afraid I still have 3 years to run on my contract, so you're stuck with me for a while."
