During the Chelsea vs PSG match, Neto pushed a young boy while trying to quickly get the ball, causing him to fall off a chair

UEFA, the governing body of European football, has launched disciplinary proceedings against Chelsea winger Pedro Neto. The action comes after an incident where he pushed a ball boy during the Champions League defeat by Paris St‑Germain (PSG).

The 26-year-old Portugal international was involved in an altercation with a ball boy during stoppage time of Wednesday's last-16 first leg at Parc des Princes. The incident occurred when Chelsea suffered a heavy 5-2 loss to PSG. In his attempt to quickly retrieve the ball, Neto shoved the young lad causing him to fall off a chair. This unexpected event sparked an altercation between both sets of players on the field.

In response to this unsporting behaviour, UEFA stated that proceedings have been instigated against Neto in accordance with its disciplinary regulations. "UEFA's disciplinary bodies will take a decision on this case in due course," added European football's governing body in its official statement. While it is unclear what sanctions or penalties may be imposed on Neto as part of these proceedings, it is evident that such behaviour is not taken lightly by UEFA and could result in serious consequences for the player.

Player apology and upcoming matches

Neto expressed remorse for his actions post-match and attributed them to being caught up "in the emotion of the game". Despite his apology, it remains uncertain how this incident might impact his participation in upcoming matches.

Pedro Neto, Chelsea player, said:

"I'm not like this. It was in the heat of the moment and I want to apologise. I gave him my shirt. I'm really sorry about it - I feel I have to apologise to him,"

"My French is not very good, and [Portugal team-mate] Vitinha came over and said to him I was not like this. At the end he [the ball boy] laughed and I gave him my shirt and said sorry about 35 times. He could see what had happened and was happy with the situation."

Chelsea are set to host PSG next Tuesday for their second leg match following Newcastle’s visit to Stamford Bridge on Saturday for their Premier League fixture. Fans will be eagerly waiting to see how these events unfold and whether they will have any significant impact on team dynamics or performance. While emotions can run high during important matches like these, it is crucial for players to maintain their composure and adhere to the principles of sportsmanship. This incident serves as a reminder that unsporting behaviour can lead to serious repercussions, not just for the individuals involved but also potentially for their teams.
