Manchester United, the iconic football club, are facing a significant challenge with its defensive line-up due to injuries. The Red Devils' options are being stretched thin as they grapple with unresolved issues.
Argentine defender Lisandro Martínez has reportedly suffered an injury setback during training. Initially, his calf strain was expected to sideline him for only a few days. However, things have not gone as planned and he has missed United’s last three matches.
According to the Daily Mail, Martínez's absence is likely to extend after an issue in training sent him back to the sidelines. While his latest problem isn't considered serious, there are growing concerns about this player whose absence has extended from less than a week to over one month.
Defensive setbacks proving problematic for Man Utd
In response to Martínez’s fresh problem, Manchester United have reevaluated their approach towards his recovery. This decision comes in light of their ongoing struggle involving another key defender - Matthijs de Ligt.
De Ligt was struck down by a back problem in November and was initially expected back the following month. However, Sunday’s meeting with Aston Villa will mark the 18th consecutive game he has missed as his spell on the sidelines extends over four months.
At this crucial stage of the season when Champions League qualification hangs in balance following defeat against Newcastle United; losing another key player for an extended period could be detrimental for Manchester United.
Man Utd’s defence on brink of disaster
The shift away from Ruben Amorim’s three-at-the-back formation provides some relief for Carrick's 4-2-3-1 formation which requires only two center backs at a time. However without both De Ligt and Martínez available; Carrick's options have become fairly stretched. The experienced Harry Maguire has partnered with 20-year-old Leny Yoro, but the depth behind them is thin.
Ayden Heaven, a 19-year-old former Arsenal youngster, has been the primary deputy. Despite showing promise in the first team, his inexperience started to show towards the end of Amorim’s reign and he has seen just eight minutes of action across three appearances since Carrick took over.
Academy graduate Godwill Kukonki has been called up to provide emergency cover for a defensive unit that appears one stroke of bad luck away from crisis. If either Maguire or Yoro were to be injured, United’s season outlook could change dramatically. With De Ligt's return still uncertain and United facing an increasingly feasible prospect of losing him for the remainder of the season; no risks can be taken with Martínez as they look forward to crucial matches against Aston Villa, Liverpool and Chelsea aiming for at least a top-four finish.
