The Argentina national team continues to face backlash following Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez's broadcasting of a racist chant. The incident, which occurred after Argentina's Copa America final victory over Colombia, has drawn widespread condemnation and put the spotlight firmly on the team.

In a video shared widely on Instagram Live, 23-year-old Fernandez was seen smiling as he and his teammates sang a song featuring derogatory comments about the African heritage of French footballers. The song also contained transphobic lyrics.

The backlash was swift and severe. Chelsea Football Club issued an official statement condemning the behaviour. Among those who criticized Fernandez was his own teammate, Wesley Fofana, who has French and Ivorian heritage.

Mac Allister defends Enzo Fernandez

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister recently spoke out about this controversy in an interview with Argentinian publication. Despite acknowledging the incident, he somewhat downplayed its severity.

Liverpool midfielder, Alexis Mac Allister, said:

"You have to take care with what you say, with what you do, especially in Europe where they are much more sensitive than here."

“The reality is that we are not a racist country; we are not used to talking about racism so much. Yes, it’s a very important topic, obviously. Enzo has already apologised and explained what happened. I don’t think there’s much more to say."

A cultural divide?

Mac Allister’s comments highlight a significant cultural divide between Europe and his native Argentina regarding racial issues' sensitivity levels. He defended his teammate's character while attempting to contextualise Fernandez's actions. However, these remarks risk being interpreted as making light of racism - an issue of grave seriousness globally.

Despite Enzo issuing an apology for his actions, fallout from the incident continues unabatedly with Chelsea instigating "an internal disciplinary procedure". Reports suggest several Chelsea players have unfollowed him on social media platforms - indicating their disapproval. In this context though, Mac Allister backed his compatriot by emphasising upon the importance of Enzo's apology.

Alexis Mac Allister added:

"We know Enzo, we know he would never do it with bad intentions. It’s just a chant that stuck and is more of a mocking tone than anything else. But, as I said, you have to be very careful. I think the most important thing is that Enzo came out, gave the relevant apologies, and that, in the end, must be valued."

The incident involving Enzo Fernandez has sparked a global conversation about racism in sports. While some, like Alexis Mac Allister, argue for cultural differences and the importance of apologies, others insist on zero tolerance towards such behaviour. As the fallout continues to unfold, it serves as a stark reminder of the need for respect and understanding in our increasingly diverse sporting world.
