Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario, is set for a lengthy absence from the field after sustaining a broken ankle during the team's recent 4-0 victory over Manchester City. Despite suffering this injury in the first half of the match, Vicario demonstrated remarkable resilience by playing on to finish the game at Etihad Stadium.
The 28-year-old Italy international collided with an opponent during Sunday afternoon’s match. Following this incident, Spurs confirmed that Vicario underwent surgery on Monday. The club released a statement but did not specify how long their star player would be out of action.
Tottenham Hotspur released statement:
"We can confirm that Guglielmo Vicario has today undergone surgery for a fracture of his right ankle. Guglielmo will be assessed by our medical staff to determine when he can return to training. We're all behind you, Vic."
Fraser Forster steps up
In light of Vicario's injury, experienced backup Fraser Forster will take over as Tottenham’s primary goalkeeper. The 36-year-old has previously featured for Spurs in both the Carabao Cup and Europa League matches this season. His last Premier League appearance was during a 4-1 victory against Leeds on the final day of last season. Notably, Forster earned his final England cap six years ago in 2016. Since joining from Empoli in summer, Vicario has made an impressive impact at Tottenham Hotspur. He marked his 50th appearance for London-based outfit during their recent win against Manchester City - a victory that helped brush off an unexpected loss to Ipswich earlier.
Vicario has quickly become an integral part of Spurs' squad due to his consistent performances and upbeat demeanor which were evident even after his injury setback. Following their emphatic win over Manchester City and despite being injured himself, he celebrated jubilantly with travelling supporters before sharing a message on Instagram: "A lot of noise recently but this is why we do it. Great win away from home."
While Vicario's injury is a significant blow to Tottenham, the team can take solace in the fact that they have an experienced goalkeeper like Fraser Forster ready to step up. As fans and teammates alike wish Vicario a speedy recovery, it will be interesting to see how Spurs navigate this challenging period without their first-choice goalkeeper.
