The Italian top flight will publish clips on its social media channels created by artificial intelligence

The Italian Serie A has made an agreement with WSC Sports to have them create automated match highlights of their games. WSC Sports, a tech firm based in Israel, will use its own AI and machine learning technology to create highlight packages in real time for the league, which it will then publicise on its social media networks and other avenues.

WSC Sports has the ability to analyse, index, crop and apply graphics to recorded moments on the pitch in real time. In a matter of moments a highlight can be produced and published online.

Serie A said it will use this tech to create auntomatic video highlights in real time of all Serie A, Supercoppa and Coppa Italia matches going forward.

In the wake of the league's decision to become the first major football league to take its product to the metaverse, this latest foray into the tech sphere underlines Serie A's ambition to become more tech savvy and appeal to younger and younger audiences.

Serie A will have access to WSC Sports' full suite of automation tools, enabling them to create and distribute highlights in real time.

Lorenzo Dallari, Editorial & Social Director of Serie A, said:

“We are extremely pleased to announce this partnership with WSC Sports. Thanks to this agreement, we’re able to continue the development plan for our social and digital platforms, which have now surpassed a total of 21 million fans who follow us regularly.

“In particular, Lega Serie A’s YouTube channel alone has recently reached 8 million subscribers, confirming it as the channel with the most subscribers among football leagues worldwide, and thanks to this agreement it will be further enriched with new videos. We are confident that in collaboration with WSC Sports we will be able to provide fans with increasingly engaging and innovative content, and to all 20 clubs in Lega Serie A, a cutting-edge product to expand their social media offering.”

Ben Mirvis, Business Development at WSC Sports, said:

“It’s an honour for us to be working with one of the biggest football leagues in the world, helping Serie A innovate their content workflow to better engage with their passionate fans. This partnership enables Serie A fans to be able to consume match content as soon as it happens on any device. We look forward to working together to push the boundaries of how content can connect fans with the teams and players they love.”

Serie A also became the first major European league to sell its domestic broadcasting rights to an OTT platform at the start of this season, when live streaming provider DAZN dislodged Sky Italia as the only place to watch Serie A in Italy.

With the league's matches exclusively available online domestically, the league pushing to expand into the metaverse and now utilising artificial intelligence to create highlights with more speed and efficiency, it's clear to see that the executives at Serie A are embracing technology to the fullest.
