Newly appointed Tottenham Hotspur manager, Roberto De Zerbi, has been handed an early fitness boost with the return of attacker Mathys Tel to training. This comes as a positive development for the north London club that is currently struggling in the Premier League.
Roberto De Zerbi was named as the new head coach of Tottenham Hotspur earlier this week, following the club's decision to part ways with interim boss Igor Tudor. The former Marseille head coach has committed himself to a five-year deal with Spurs, demonstrating his dedication despite their precarious position in England's top-flight league.
De Zerbi inherits a team languishing in 17th place on the Premier League table and just one point above West Ham United who are sitting uncomfortably in 18th spot.
Mathys Tel returns from injury
The new Spurs boss will be eager to have all his players fit and ready for action for their remaining seven matches of this season. Therefore, it was indeed encouraging news when Tel was spotted participating in Friday's training session.
Tel’s injury status had raised concerns after he limped off during a 3-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest before the international break. Subsequently withdrawing from France Under-21 squad allowed him valuable time for recovery over this period.
His involvement in De Zerbi’s first training session – captured briefly on Tottenham’s social media channels – signals his readiness ahead of Spurs' next Premier League match against Sunderland on April 12th.
Ongoing injury concerns at Spurs
While Tel seems set for selection, De Zerbi still faces several injury-related challenges ahead of his debut game as manager. Goalkeeper Gugliemo Vicario is unlikely to be available due to recent hernia surgery while defender Ben Davies continues to be sidelined with an ankle injury.
Midfielder Yves Bissouma's participation is also uncertain after he missed the game against Forest. Rodrigo Bentancur and Mohammed Kudus are both on the mend, but it remains unclear whether they will be fit for next Sunday's fixture.
The club also has to cope without long-term absentees James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, and Wilson Odobert. Despite these challenges, De Zerbi’s tenure at Spurs begins on a positive note with Tel’s return to training. As the team prepares for their upcoming match against Sunderland, fans will be hoping that this early fitness boost marks the start of a turnaround in fortunes for their beloved club.
