Premier League football fans in the UK can look forward to streaming matches live on Discovery+ as BT Sport undergoes a rebranding to become TNT Sports. This change comes as part of an innovative joint venture between Warner Bros Discovery (WBD) and BT.
The rebranding process involves all four BT Sport channels, with Discovery+ now set to be the singular online streaming platform for TNT Sports within the UK. This move will eventually lead to the retirement of the dedicated BT Sport app.
TNT sports content will form part of a new premium tier subscription on Discovery+. Alongside this renewed sports offering, subscribers will also have access to Eurosport and other entertainment from WBD. Despite these additions, pricing remains consistent at £29.99 per month - mirroring that formerly charged for a monthly pass at BT Sport.
Subscribers won't only benefit from viewing accessibility via their digital devices; they'll also find compatibility with Sky and BT TV platforms which intertwine linear channel offerings with application-based content using one set-top box.
With additional competitors such as Apple, DAZN and Disney potentially stepping into future bidding wars when auctions begin later this year, there could be more lucrative deals ahead for English top-tier football broadcasting right holders including TNT Sports who share current Premier League airing rights domestically alongside Amazon Prime and Sky Sports.
Over the years leading up to this deal, BT Sport developed features around live match streams involving alternative user experiences like Stadium Experience & Manager Mode. Although it’s still uncertain how many such features would carry over onto Discover+, CEO David Zaslav has hinted that emphasis would remain focused primarily on actual event coverage while breaking away from ties associated initially with past branding roots tied back to British Telecom.
Although official stances remain reserved regarding the outcome of the upcoming Premiere League rights auction, it seems improbable that powerhouse conglomerate Warner Bros Discovery would opt out after recently acquiring the second-largest sports broadcaster within the local market.
