In a display of sportsmanship and respect, Chelsea Football Club has confirmed that they will give the newly-crowned Premier League champions, Liverpool, a guard of honour at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon. This decision comes ahead of their much-anticipated showdown.
The Reds clinched the Premier League title with four games to spare last weekend after thrashing Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 at Anfield. While not compulsory, it has become customary for teams who have been declared champions before the final weekend of the season to have their achievement recognised by opponents before matches.
This tradition was upheld back in 2020 when Liverpool were given such treatment for seven games having raced away with the championship before ending the campaign on an impressive 99 points. When asked whether Liverpool can expect a guard of honour this weekend.
Chelsea boss, Enzo Maresca, said
"It's a tradition that you have to do and we want to do because they won the league and they deserve that. Hopefully we can be there (winning the league) very soon."
Race for top five continues
Chelsea's decision comes amidst their own pursuit for glory. After winning 4-1 against Djugarden in their Conference League semi-final first leg on Thursday night, Chelsea remains in contention for a top-five finish and Champions League qualification. They currently stand in fifth place ahead of Nottingham Forest based solely on goal difference.
The race is tight as just five points separate third from seventh place. The Londoners also face upcoming challenges as they are yet to face Manchester United at home while also travelling to near rivals Newcastle United and Forest.
As sports fans eagerly anticipate Sunday’s match between these two football giants, it is clear that respect and tradition continue to play significant roles within sport culture - even amidst fierce competition. While both teams have their sights set on victory, Chelsea's decision to honour Liverpool with a guard of honour serves as a reminder that sportsmanship and respect are just as important as the final score. This gesture not only acknowledges Liverpool's impressive achievement but also sets an example for other teams in the league.
