Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, and Elliot Anderson are high on United's potential signing list

Manchester United are gearing up for a significant summer transfer spree, with the club reportedly preparing to invest heavily in their midfield. The Red Devils are said to be on the hunt for an 'irreplaceable' midfielder who can leave a lasting legacy at Old Trafford.

Casemiro, the Brazilian central midfielder, has announced that this season will be his last at Manchester United. His departure is expected to come at a steep price, with the club freeing up transfer funds of around £170 million. Interestingly, Casemiro has recommended Bruno Guimaraes as his favoured choice for replacement.

United reportedly view Guimaraes as a foundational player for their future. Newcastle signed him from Lyon four years ago for £42m and stand to make a tidy profit should they decide to sell him now. However, Newcastle have been clear that Guimaraes is not currently on sale and are even discussing extending his stay at St James’ Park.

Other potential signings

While Guimaraes tops United’s wishlist, other names like Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson also find themselves high on the list of potential signings. Tonali’s move from Newcastle to another top Premier League team seems increasingly likely rather than returning back home to Serie A. Informal talks have already taken place between United representatives and both Tonali and Guimaraes but it would likely take an offer exceeding £125m – similar to what Liverpool spent on Alexander Isak –  to convince Newcastle into parting ways with either player. Anderson remains firmly in sight after an impressive 18 months at both club and international level. However, there is uncertainty over his asking price, which will depend on Nottingham Forest’s fight to remain in the Premier League.

Joao Gomes is reportedly hoping for a call from United. With Wolves looking certain to drop down into the Championship with ten games remaining of the top-flight campaign, this could be an opportunity for United to swoop in. United's focus on strengthening their midfield comes amidst a revival under interim head coach Michael Carrick. The team has been firing on all cylinders during their unbeaten streak under him. Alongside Ange Postecoglou, Carrick has enjoyed one of the best starts after nine matches of any manager in Premier League history.

The majority of the first-team squad would now like to see ex-England midfielder given a long-term contract beyond this summer according to recent reports. This suggests that while there are significant changes expected within the team structure, continuity might be sought in leadership as Manchester United prepares for its next chapter.
