Fernandes expressed hurt at Manchester United's apparent readiness to let him go, but chose to stay and excel in his performance

Manchester United captain, Bruno Fernandes, recently opened up about his decision to reject a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia last summer. Despite the club's struggles and a tempting offer from Al-Hilal, Fernandes chose to stay at Old Trafford.

Last season was challenging for Manchester United as they finished in 15th place and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur. This meant missing out on European football entirely. However, amidst these struggles, one player stood out - Bruno Fernandes. Fernandes had an exceptional individual campaign with 19 goals and as many assists under his belt. His performance earned him the club’s Player of the Month and Players’ Player of the Month awards.

Recognizing his talent, Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal identified Fernandes as their top target ahead of the Club World Cup. They launched an aggressive campaign to lure him away from United by offering a three-year contract worth around £200m and prepared a bid of £100m for his transfer. Despite this tempting offer, Manchester United left it up to Fernandes to decide his future. After weeks of speculation, he decided against moving away from Old Trafford – much to fans' delight.

Decision to stay

Fernandes later revealed that he felt "hurt" by what he perceived as Manchester United's willingness to let him go but chose not only stay but also continue excelling in his performance. With five games left in this season at that time, he had already scored eight goals with 18 assists under his name.

He was just three assists short of usurping Premier League record held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne then - an achievement which further solidified calls for him being named Premier League Player of Year.

Wayne Rooney expressed confidence that Fernades would win this accolade during a chat on BBC where they discussed Fernandes' contributions and his decision to snub the move to Saudi Arabia.

Unfolding of last summer's transfer saga

Fernandes' decision to stay at Manchester United despite their struggles and a lucrative offer from Al-Hilal is testament to his commitment towards the club. His performance continues to be instrumental in the team's success, making him one of the most valuable players in Premier League today.

Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United player, said:

“I stayed because I thought I still had something that I can give back to the club. Obviously the Saudi situation, with the money… there was a lot. The good thing I have in my family is that my wife is pretty down to earth like me.”

“We’re very aware that we don’t want to be the richest person in the world. We just want to be the ones that have achieved the dreams they had and live a good life with their kids and trying to be as successful as possible. The words of my wife were like, ‘have you achieved your dreams? Have you achieved everything you wanted?’ And that small thing she said made me understand that she’s on the same page as me. Let’s keep trying and see where this takes me. I didn’t want to leave the club at the point where we were struggling.”

Bruno Fernandes' story serves as an inspiration for sports fans and sports betting enthusiasts alike. It highlights that loyalty, dedication, and passion can often outweigh financial incentives - a lesson that resonates beyond football.
