Rocchi is accused of urging a VAR official to have a referee reassess a handball incident during Udinese's 1-0 win over Parma last March

In a surprising turn of events, Gianluca Rocchi, the man responsible for assigning referees in Italy's top-flight football, has voluntarily suspended himself. This decision comes in the wake of an ongoing investigation into alleged sporting fraud during the 2024-25 season.

According to reports from AGI, an Italian news agency, Rocchi is under scrutiny for his suspected involvement in "complicity in sporting fraud." A preliminary hearing regarding these allegations has been scheduled for Thursday.

The former international referee's role as the National Referees Commission's referee designator for Serie A and Serie B puts him at the center of this controversy. The implications of these charges could have far-reaching effects on his career and reputation within Italian football.

Confirmation from Italian referees association (AIA)

The AIA confirmed Rocchi's self-imposed suspension following the launch of this investigation by Milan Public Prosecutor’s Office. In a statement released by them, they also revealed that Andrea Gervasoni - video assistant referee supervisor for Italy’s two top divisions - had similarly suspended himself after being placed under investigation.

Rocchi stands accused of pressuring a VAR official to encourage a referee to review a handball offence during Udinese's 1-0 victory over Parma in March last year. Despite initially deciding against awarding a penalty, it is claimed that both officials changed their minds after Rocchi’s intervention. This led to Florian Thauvin scoring what would be the only goal of that game.

Gianluca Rocchi, Italian referee chief, said:

"This painful and difficult decision, shared with my family, is intended to allow the judicial process to proceed smoothly, from which I am certain I will emerge unscathed and stronger than before."

"My great love for my association and my sense of responsibility for the role I hold lead me, above all, to protect such an important group of athletes, whom I do not want to be affected in any way by my circumstances. I await further developments, which I hope will arrive soon to clarify my position."

Sporting fraud is considered a serious criminal offense within Italy and carries severe penalties upon conviction – including up to six years imprisonment. As such, these allegations against high-ranking officials like Rocchi and Gervasoni could have significant implications for their careers and the broader Italian football community.

The unfolding investigation into alleged sporting fraud involving top-ranking officials in Italy's football leagues has sent shockwaves through the sports world. As fans and sports betting enthusiasts await further developments, it remains to be seen how these allegations will impact the integrity of Italian football.
