Police have confirmed their awareness of a video circulating online that seemingly depicts a York City player punching a fan during the club's intense 1-1 draw with Rochdale on Saturday. This incident occurred amidst the excitement of York's promotion back to the Football League after a decade-long absence, thanks to Josh Stones' equaliser in the 13th minute of stoppage time.
The match was marked by two pitch invasions. The first followed Rochdale's opener in the 96th minute, with Rochdale needing victory to top the table and secure automatic promotion. The second invasion came after York's dramatic equaliser in the 113th minute.
Footage from one of these invasions appears to show a fan placing his hands on a kneeling York player who had his head against the ground. After intervention by two stewards, this player managed to stand up and break free before allegedly punching this fan in the face.
Arrests made post-incident
In response to these incidents, police reported that four Rochdale fans were arrested: one on suspicion of assault and pitch incursion; one for suspected public order offence; and two for alleged pitch incursion. Additionally, one male York City fan was arrested under suspicion of assault, with police stating he would be interviewed at a later date.
Greater Manchester Police released statement:
"We are aware of a video that is circulating of a possible assault involving a player and we have linked in with both clubs and the National League,"
"We will be further assessing the video and reviewing CCTV of the incident."
The Football Association is also investigating these incidents alongside law enforcement agencies. BBC Sport has reached out to both clubs involved -York and Rochdale- for comments regarding this matter.
This final-day showdown between York and Rochdale was particularly significant as they had amassed an impressive total of 212 points between them heading into it. For its part, York needed only avoid defeat in order to secure their return ticket back into League Two. This incident underscores not only tensions that can arise in high-stakes games, but also the importance of maintaining safety and respect both on and off the pitch. As investigations continue, fans and players alike will be watching closely for updates.
