Tottenham forward, Richarlison, has suffered a new injury setback, according to an update provided by Ange Postecoglou. The former Everton frontman had been dealing with a knee problem recently but seemed set for a return to the field. However, fresh concerns arose when he was left out of Brazil's squad for the upcoming Copa America tournament.
Richarlison had returned off the bench in last month’s north London derby defeat by Arsenal and started against Chelsea. He also scored as a substitute in last weekend’s losing effort against Liverpool at Anfield. His potential availability for Saturday’s home Premier League match with Burnley was anticipated eagerly by fans and teammates alike.
However, these hopes were dashed on Friday evening when Dorival Jr announced Brazil's squad for next month's Copa America matches in the United States without including Richarlison due to his calf problem.
Brazil manager, Dorival Jr, said:
“Richarlison has a calf injury. It has not yet been made official by the club, but we contacted the player and he informed us."
Postecoglou don’t know the timeline for Richarlison
Postecoglou confirmed that Richarlison was absent from the matchday squad named by Spurs to take on relegation-threatened Burnley due to this fresh injury concern. The head coach provided an update on his condition but did not give any specific timeline for his return.
Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham manager, said:
“Yeah, he picked up, in the last action of training yesterday, a calf injury and we’re not too sure.
“He’s gone for a scan so we’ll wait and see what the outcome is, but not available for today.”
Richarlison has started only 18 of Tottenham’s 36 Premier League matches so far this season due to various injuries and fitness issues. Despite these setbacks, he managed impressive stats - scoring 12 goals in 31 appearances across all competitions amid more transfer links involving Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal.
The Brazilian’s future in doubt for summer
The question remains whether or not the 27-year-old will be fit enough to play any part at home against Manchester City on Tuesday night in what is considered a pivotal fixture in the title race. Spurs are set to end their campaign away at relegated Sheffield United next weekend.
Tottenham are already dealing with the absence of several key players like Destiny Udogie, Timo Werner, Ben Davies, Fraser Forster, Manor Solomon and Ryan Sessegnon for the remainder of the season. They are currently battling with Aston Villa for a fourth-place finish and Champions League qualification for next term.
Richarlison's injury is a significant setback for Tottenham. However, fans will be hoping that their team can overcome these challenges and secure their place in next season's Champions League.
