Marc Cucurella was caught red-handed by Aston attackers

It is time and again that Chelsea's poor form in the Premier League is due in large part to their inferior defence. Chelsea's defenders were again caught in a red-handed situation in the first half of the match against Aston Villa, after providing some clinical performances in recent matches.

In the first half of the game, Ollie Watkins opened the scoring for the Villans through a troubling through ball from midfielders, but even though the ball wasn't inch-perfect, Chelsea's defenders helped make it reach the right destination.

This offence was committed by Marc Cucurella, who was ripped apart by Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie.

While reviewing the first half of Chelsea versus Aston Villa on Sky Sports, Lee Hendrie was not impressed with Chelsea's defenders and said:

"Schoolboy defending. I don't understand why Cucurella is going into that area"

At the Sky Sports’ half-time show of Chelsea versus Aston Villa, both pundits Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Lee Hendrie talked extensively about Cucurella and Kouliby's positioning at the moment of goal.

Aston Villa took the lead in the first 45 minutes despite Chelsea dominating the whole half. Cucurella's silly mistake was enough to put Aston Villa in the lead.

Chelsea again failed to take the chances which left Graham Potter frustrated

In the first half, the Blues' attack looked lethal, but again, they lacked the finishing touch in the final third. Particularly, Mykhailo Mudryk missed a one-on-one opportunity against Emiliano Martinez.

The first half of the game also saw Ben Chillwell score a goal from a cross, which was disallowed by the referee because of a foul on a defender of Aston Villa. The goal, although, should've been stood by the referee according to Sky Sports' Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink who defended Ben Chillwell and said:

"I think it's a goal. When you jump you're always going to use your hands. I don't think it's a push. I think Young is making a meal out of it and makes the referee's mind up."

Prior to this clash with Aston Villa, Graham Potter’s life at Chelsea was already hanging on very thin ice and the defenders of Chelsea have only made his life even more difficult. Chelsea has failed both on the offensive and defensive fronts in recent months, and many people are questioning his tactics as well.
