Manchester United has undergone significant changes since Sir Jim Ratcliffe became co-owner in 2024. Following the confirmation of Ratcliffe's investment, Ineos assumed control of football operations at Manchester United, initiating a comprehensive restructuring of the club.
The restructure led to over 400 redundancies and numerous staff changes, including a new head coach and backroom staff. Omar Berrada was appointed as chief executive, while Jason Wilcox took on the role of football director after working with Dan Ashworth for five months.
However, these sweeping changes also meant that many respected figures within the club found themselves without employment. This situation presented an opportunity for other clubs to capitalize on United’s staff cuts.
Power of networks in football
Football is a field where networks and connections often prove crucial - whether you're a journalist or senior club executive. The importance of these connections is becoming increasingly evident as more former members from United’s staff find employment elsewhere.
In an exciting development, Salford City have announced their appointment of former United executive Ronan Joyce to their hierarchy. Joyce spent three years at Old Trafford before leaving two months ago; he now steps into his new role as Salford City’s Chief Business Officer (CBO). During his tenure at Manchester United, Joyce was responsible for digital growth and innovation strategies and demonstrated strong commercial leadership skills.
Salford City confirmed Joyce's appointment on Monday evening with an official statement: “Salford City Football Club (SCFC) today announced the appointment of Ronan Joyce as the Club’s new Chief Business Officer (CBO).”
Ronan Joyce, Former Manchester United executive, said:
“The opportunity to help shape the commercial strategy of such a forward-thinking and ambitious club is incredibly exciting. Together with our leadership group, I look forward to building a team and culture that delivers for our fans, our partners, and the wider community.”
Currently ranked eighth in League Two table, Salford City will be looking forward to leveraging Joyce's expertise not just on but off the pitch too.
