Spanish public-service broadcaster RTVE and sports rights holding agency Mediapro have successfully secured the television rights for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026. The acquisition came after a competitive tender process initiated by FIFA, world soccer’s governing body.

FIFA had tendered the rights to broadcast the 2026 and 2030 World Cups in Spain back in January 2025. The deadline for bid submissions was set at 10 am (Central European Time) on February 18.

RTVE emerged victorious, securing free-to-air coverage rights in Spain for the World Cup's 2026 edition. Reportedly, RTVE outbid private operators with a hefty €55 million ($60.1 million) offer to secure this coveted package. The coverage will likely be delivered via RTVE’s primary channels La1 and La2, as well as its Teledeporte network.

Mediapro's role in broadcasting

Mediapro may establish its own network to deliver its slate of rights or could sublicense its games to a provider such as pay-TV service Movistar. However, no specific details were released on how broadcasting responsibilities would be divided between RTVE and Mediapro.

The upcoming tournament is set to make history by being hosted across three countries - US, Canada, and Mexico - marking it as an unprecedented event in football history. Moreover, it will feature an expanded roster of teams with up to 48 teams participating across a total of 104 matches – more than any previous edition of the tournament. RTVE has been consistent with their sports coverage over recent years; they covered the FIFA World Cup held in Qatar alongside Movistar back in 2022 which was initially acquired by Mediapro through a deal disclosed early on during that year.

In addition to the World Cup, RTVE also showcased the 2024 UEFA European Championship and recently secured rights to broadcast the 2028 edition of that tournament. They will also cover all Spanish national team matches in UEFA competition up until that point.

RTVE's investment in sports broadcasting

RTVE has reportedly spent over €360 million to secure high-profile sports rights for upcoming years. This investment extends beyond soccer, encompassing major sporting events like the 2028 and 2032 Olympic Games, the Winter Olympic Games for both 2026 and 2030, as well as cycling’s iconic Tour de France through till 2030 among others.

This commitment by RTVE demonstrates their dedication towards providing comprehensive coverage of major sporting events for their audience. It is a testament to their commitment towards enhancing viewer experience while promoting sports culture across Spain.
