Romero, sidelined by a knee injury, is racing against time to be fit for the upcoming World Cup

Tottenham manager Roberto de Zerbi has come forward to defend club captain Cristian Romero's absence from the season finale against Everton. The 28-year-old Argentine defender will be in his native country instead of participating in the final match of the campaign at home, as Tottenham fights to avoid relegation.

Romero was already set to miss this game due to a knee injury and is currently battling time constraints for fitness ahead of this summer's World Cup. Despite his absence, a win for Spurs could guarantee their Premier League safety, although even a draw might suffice given their superior goal difference over 18th-placed West Ham United.

The decision has understandably upset many fans. While other injured Tottenham players like Ben Davies are expected to attend the match, Romero plans on watching his boyhood club Belgrano compete against River Plate. De Zerbi acknowledged these sentiments saying he "100%" understands why fans are disgruntled about it.

Tottenham manager, Roberto de Zerbi, said:

"He spoke with the medical staff. Together, they decided to go to Argentina to complete the rehab. We spoke last week. With me, he showed always he wants to stay with us. The injury is already injured and we have to accept.

"I'm not stupid. If I understand there is any player or some player who thinks for himself before the club, I can't be the same Roberto. With Cuti Romero, I can't say nothing because with me in my time, he's been correct. At the beginning until now."

However, De Zerbi also clarified that Romero's return to Argentina was agreed upon with the club's medical staff. This move is seen as part of an effort for him to recover optimally from his injury sustained during a game against Sunderland at Stadium of Light in April.

Criticism and support

Former Spurs captain and manager Glenn Hoddle criticized Romero’s decision calling it "scandalous". However, Belgrano president Luis Artime reportedly confirmed that Romero is permitted use of their training facility during his recovery period.

Romero recently posted a video congratulating Belgrano who have qualified for their first Argentina Primera Division Apertura final which kicks off at 19:30 BST on Sunday - just hours after Spurs host Everton starting from 16:00 BST.

Despite all controversies, De Zerbi stated that his primary focus remains on the players who are able to play in Sunday's crucial match. This statement underlines the team's determination to secure their position in the Premier League, regardless of Romero's absence.

While Romero’s decision has sparked controversy among fans and former players alike, it is clear that Tottenham’s focus remains on securing their place in the Premier League. As for Romero, his recovery and preparation for the upcoming World Cup seem to be his top priorities. Only time will tell how these decisions impact both Tottenham’s season finale and Romero’s future performances.
