Mikel Arteta, Arsenal manager, has made peace with Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler after a recent controversy. Following last week's 1-0 loss to the Premier League leaders, Hurzeler accused the Gunners of "making their own rules", sparking a debate about Arsenal’s style of play.
Arteta confirmed that he and Hurzeler are now on good terms after receiving an explanatory text from the Brighton boss. In his message, Hurzeler expressed "huge respect" for both Arteta and everyone at Arsenal. However, Arteta chose not to disclose further details about their exchange.
Mikel Arteta, Arsenal manager, said:
“That’s a personal conversation. Obviously he’s made public and now said some comments that he made before and that says, I think, a lot of positive things about him as a person.
“So I appreciate that and the rest, you know, I think he’s a fantastic coach. The job that he is doing at Brighton is really, really good and that’s fine.”
Despite these accusations, Arteta remained firm in defending his team’s approach ahead of Saturday’s top-flight meeting with Everton. Critics have pointed out that Arsenal relies heavily on set-pieces and lacks what some perceive as excitement or beauty in their game. This sentiment was echoed by Alan Pardew who described their style as “functional”.
However, it is worth noting that despite these criticisms, Arsenal currently sits seven points clear of second-placed Manchester City who still have a game in hand.
Injury concerns ahead of Everton match
As they prepare for Everton's visit this weekend, there are no fresh injury concerns within the team according to Arteta. However, it remains uncertain if players Martin Odegaard and Leandro Trossard will be fit enough to participate in the match.
While discussing potential relegation threats for other teams such as Tottenham Hotspur - one of Arsenal's biggest rivals - Arteta did not explicitly express hope for Tottenham’s survival but acknowledged the appeal of preserving top-flight rivalries like the north London derby.
Mikel Arteta added:
"I continue to say, it's one of the most beautiful games that we have, because when there is that passion and that rivalry, when it's in the right way in a sport, I think it elevates the game and the feelings and the emotions after winning to a different level.
"And yeah, it's not for me to say what is going to happen, but I can describe certainly how it is to play against each other."
This recent controversy has highlighted the intense scrutiny that comes with leading a top-flight football team. Despite criticisms and accusations, Arteta remains committed to his approach and continues to lead Arsenal towards success in the Premier League. The upcoming match against Everton will be another test of their strategy and resilience.
