Zubimendi feels loyalty is more important than money and Premier League glory

In the world of football, transfer windows are often filled with speculation and anticipation. This summer was no different, especially for Liverpool fans who were eagerly awaiting the arrival of Spain international Martin Zubimendi. However, in a surprising turn of events, Zubimendi chose to stay at Real Sociedad, turning down a lucrative move to Liverpool.

Liverpool had identified Zubimendi as one of their key targets over the summer transfer window. The Reds were so keen on securing his services that they agreed to meet his hefty £51m release clause. With such an offer on the table, it seemed almost certain that Zubimendi would be heading towards Anfield.

Choosing loyalty over Premier League glory

Despite the tempting offer from one of England's top-flight clubs and their impressive start to the season - sitting top of the Premier League table after six games - Zubimendi decided against making a move. Instead, he signed a new contract with Real Sociedad – a club he has been associated with since 2011.

The 25-year-old midfielder insists he is 'happy and at peace' with his decision and feels very comfortable with his choice despite Liverpool’s impressive form this season.

Martin Zubimendi, Real Sociedad midfielder, said:

‘My philosophy is to do at home at all times what comes from within, I went through uncomfortable moments. The best thing for me was to stay here and I am happy and at peace. Because of the press there is a lot of noise but in the end everything is easer than all that.

‘Of course I don’t regret it, I can’t think that after four or five games at the start of the season. I made my decision from within, I thought it was the best thing to do, the results don’t affect me. I see the potential in this team, you just have to watch us train and I’m excited about having a good season.’

Zubimendi had already spoken about this decision earlier in September expressing loyalty towards Real Sociedad - the club that gave him his professional start.

Martin Zubimendi added:

‘Real Sociedad for me is my life, I think I have spent half my life there, A lot of what I am is part of La Real, it is my life.’

Impact on Liverpool's transfer window activity

Zubimendi's decision not only surprised many but also significantly impacted Liverpool’s transfer window activity. After failing to secure him, it proved to be quite quiet for them in terms of new signings during this period. Federico Chiesa was their only notable arrival over summer which left some fans feeling underwhelmed considering they were expecting more reinforcements following an injury-plagued previous season.

In an era where lucrative contracts and the allure of playing in top leagues often sway players, Zubimendi's decision to stay at Real Sociedad is a testament to his loyalty and love for the club. It also serves as a reminder that football is not just about money or fame, but also about passion, commitment, and allegiance to one's roots.

While Liverpool fans may be disappointed with this missed opportunity, they can take solace in the fact that their club remains attractive to top talents around the world. As for Zubimendi, he continues his journey with Real Sociedad - a journey marked by loyalty and dedication.
