Preview: Liverpool vs Man City

For several years this fixture has been billed as a clash between the two very best teams in the Premier League, and the two most likely contenders for its crown. That is not the case this season. It's still early days and a lot can change over the remaining 30 or so more games, but right now Liverpool are languishing in mid table nowhere near the top spot, which is currently occupied by Arsenal, who beat them 3-2 last weekend.

Jurgen Klopp must get his players going soon before this mini-crisis turns into a full blown meltdown and the club has to face up to the possibility of missing out on the top four and Champions League qualification, something which seemed impossible before the campaign started.

Man City, on the other hand, look utterly unstoppable. They are currently in second behind leaders Arsenal but remain unbeaten, having scored a staggering 33 goals in 9 games. Marquee summer signing Erling Haaland has scored 15 goals across those 9 games and quickly cultivated an image as a supernatural talent who strikes fear into the hearts of goalkeepers, defenders and managers up and down the land.

The two clubs are in very different positions. Liverpool are struggling to find consistency. Their own summer splash Darwin Nunez has failed to set the world alight. Their defence seems to have lost all of its strength. Guardiola's side are playing the City way, the way they always do, with aplomb, and now benefit from having a Norse God with a knack for scoring from every conceivable angle at the head of their attack.

On paper it seems like City's game to lose but it's important to remember that a matter of months ago Liverpool bested this weekend's visitors in the Community Shield with Nunez starring over Haaland. The narrative may have changed so much since then, but the quality is still there in Klopp's side, and this will be a major test for both coaches, tactically speaking.

If Klopp can come out on top, Liverpool will potentially be bouyed enough by the result to go on a run and try to close the gap to the top three which are currently emerging in the title race - Arsenal, City and Spurs. If City win, Liverpool will be consigned to focusing on Champions League qualification, which will be bitterly disappointing for the club and its fans at such an early stage of the season. A draw would hurt Liverpool more than City, but wouldn't be ideal for either.

Liverpool vs Man City Betting Tips

Games between these sides are often tumultous and very hard to predict. However, there are some key metrics to go on.

One thing to note is that while City have won four of the last five Premier League titles, through consistent performances throughout the season, they've won just one of their last six meetings with Liverpool. Just because Guardiola's men are in sensational form and Liverpool are stumbling doesn't mean they will run away with this one. Both EPL fixtures between the two finished in draws last season, and since then Liverpool have beaten City in the FA Cup and the Community Shield.

If you take form out of the equation, these are two very evenly matched sides in terms of quality on the pitch with arguably the two best coaches in the world in the dugout. Three of their last six meetings have been draws and that looks tempting again here. The best approach might be a "Man City Double Chance" meaning that if City win or draw, you win the bet. That looks to be the most likely outcome in terms of match result.

Aside from winners and losers, we can expect goals and plenty of them. Both teams have scored in each of the last six meetings between the two, with four or more goals landing in five of those six games. "Both Teams to Score" and "Goals Over 2.5" both feel like guaranteed bankers here.

The final market to pay close attention to is of course the goalscorer market. Erling Haaland won't give you great odds as he is expected to score, and usually does, in practically every match he takes part in. However, if you parlay Haaland with Darwin Nunez and back both players to get on the scoresheet, you should get some good value. Liverpool's summer signing seems to be in resurgent form having scored in back-to-back games against Arsenal and Rangers, and already proved in the season curtain raiser that he can score against City - back him to do the same here. "Haaland and Nunez to score anytime" looks like good value.
