Graham Potter, the former Chelsea boss, has recently addressed the swirling rumours linking him to both Manchester United and the England men's team. In a recent interview with Sky Sports, he dismissed much of what is being reported in the media as 'untrue and false'.
Manchester United is currently facing a period of managerial uncertainty. Erik ten Hag's position remains unstable due to an unsteady start to his tenure at Old Trafford. Despite having at least two more games to prove his worth, there are already speculations about potential replacements. Potter has emerged as one of those heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford. The speculation comes from INEOS who reportedly see him as their preferred option for the Red Devils.
The former Swansea and Brighton manager has been out of work since April 2023 after being sacked by Chelsea following a disappointing run of 31 games. However, his commendable work at Swansea and Brighton prior to that stint keeps his reputation intact in football circles. When asked about potentially taking up the reins at Man United, Potter remained non-committal:
Graham Potter, Former Chelsea manager, said:
“I think what I’ve read so far in the media, a lot of it’s untrue and false. I think I’m the only coach in world football that’s been linked with Stoke City and Napoli in the same week!
"I take what the media say with a pinch of salt. I’ve had lots of conversations with lots of people and for the respect of everybody I think it’s best to keep those private.”
England men's team job also on cards?
In addition to Manchester United rumours, Potter’s name also features prominently in discussions regarding the vacant England men’s team job. Following Gareth Southgate's decision to step down after leading England on an impressive journey all the way up till Euro 2024 final, The Three Lions are now actively seeking a new head coach.
Lee Carsley is currently holding down fort as interim coach but it seems that Potter could be considered for this role too. When questioned about this possibility during an interview session, he humorously tried deflecting away from these speculations: Despite all these rumours surrounding him though, when asked about where he sees himself next professionally speaking; Potter stated: “I’m open to everything. I’m open to anything."
Graham Potter added:
"As I said at the start, I had 12 years and a fantastic journey from the fourth tier of Swedish football to the last eight of the Champions League. I’d really like to spend the next 12 years in the same sort of position; developing players, developing teams, working with people - wherever that is, I’m open to anything.”
While the future remains uncertain for Graham Potter, it's clear that his past achievements have kept him in high regard within football circles. Whether he ends up at Manchester United or leading England's national team, fans will be eagerly watching to see where this talented coach lands next.
