Gary Lineker, a former Tottenham Hotspur striker and current host of The Rest is Football podcast, has recently come under fire for his criticism of England's performance in Euro 2024. His comments have reportedly caused discomfort among the staff at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), where he also works.
England entered Euro 2024 as one of the favourites to win. However, despite reaching the final, their performances were less than inspiring according to Lineker. He was particularly critical of Gareth Southgate's men and their showings in Berlin.
In an episode following England's 1-1 draw with Denmark during the group stage, Lineker did not hold back his disappointment.
Former English footballer, Gary Lineker, said:
“You can think of all sorts of words and expletives if you like, but it was sh*t. Was it tactically inept? They’re just a little bit lost tactically. And that comes from the manager, I’m afraid. It really does. He’s got to get England playing higher up the pitch, as a unit. Because at the moment they’re not a unit. Are they not coached to play that?"
BBC staff 'embarrassed' by host’s remarks
According to a report by The Telegraph, these remarks have not been well-received within the BBC staff. Staff members who interact with Southgate regularly are said to be "uncomfortable and embarrassed" by the controversy sparked by Lineker’s comments.
The report further claims that several members are unhappy that Lineker does not have to adhere to their impartiality guidelines due to his position as a podcast host outside of his work for BBC.
Uncertainty over future contract
Adding fuel to this controversy is uncertainty over whether or not Gary will extend his contract with BBC when it expires next summer. At present, it remains unclear if he will continue working with this prestigious British broadcaster given recent events.
Despite all this turmoil behind-the-scenes at BBC, Gareth Southgate appears unfazed by negative reactions towards him or his team’s performance in Euro 2024 matches. This resilience may prove beneficial as they navigate future competitions and public scrutiny alike.
While sports fans appreciate candid commentary from experts like Gary Lineker, it's clear that his recent remarks have caused a stir within the BBC. As this situation unfolds, it will be interesting to see how it impacts Lineker’s future with the broadcaster and England's performance in upcoming tournaments.
