The FA's innovative approach involves a unique podcast-like series that encourages viewers to stay alert and attentive

The Football Association (FA) has launched an innovative campaign to promote its annual Play Safe Weekend, a significant event that champions safeguarding across the game. The campaign features a promotional film masquerading as an episode of a video podcast titled "Eyes on the Ball."

The FA's unique approach involves viewers tuning into what appears to be a new podcast series. However, this is not your typical podcast; it encourages viewers to pay close attention and remain alert throughout.

Featuring Sky Sports presenter Joe Thomlinson in conversation with former Premier League player Anton Ferdinand and AFC Croydon Athletic coach Sian Fitzpatrick, the video has been produced by England Football. The aim is not only entertainment but also education about the importance of staying aware of small changes that can easily go unnoticed.

Maintaining focus

As Thomlinson, Ferdinand, and Fitzpatrick discuss maintaining focus during games and training sessions, Thomlinson suddenly interrupts the chat with an unexpected question for his audience - "Were you really paying attention? This is not even a real podcast." He then reveals 19 changes made throughout the two-and-a-half-minute film.

Thomlinson emphasizes that when one focuses too much on one detail, they often miss subtle changes happening around them. He notes that even "the smallest shift in a player’s mood, body language or behaviour can mean something really important.” The short film concludes with an essential reminder for those working with children and young people in football - “watch, listen, talk act” - urging them always to keep their “eyes on the ball”.

This metaphorical phrase serves as advice for coaches and mentors within football clubs at all levels – from grassroots games up to the Premier League – to stay vigilant and attentive, ensuring the safety and well-being of young players.

Endorsed by NSPCC

The Play Safe campaign is endorsed by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) and will be supported across every level of English football this weekend. This includes the Premier League, EFL, Barclays Women’s Super League, Barclays WSL2, National League and grassroots games.

Sue Ravenlaw, head of safeguarding at The FA, said:

“This year’s Play Safe campaign is all about encouraging adults in football to actively listen to children — to notice the small things, ask questions, and create a safe space for open conversations. Play Safe Weekend is a powerful reminder that safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. We want every club, league and individual involved in the game to feel confident in their role and proud of the part they play in keeping football safe, fun and inclusive for all.”

This year's theme for Play Safe Weekend is "Small Talk is Bigger Than You Think," focusing on giving young people a voice. The FA's innovative approach with its pseudo-podcast film serves as an engaging way to promote this message while emphasizing vigilance in safeguarding within football.
