Erik ten Hag, the former Manchester United manager, has broken his silence following his recent dismissal from the club. The 54-year-old Dutchman was relieved of his duties on Monday after a defeat to West Ham left the team in 14th place in the Premier League table. During his two and a half years at Old Trafford, Ten Hag led United to win two significant trophies - the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup. Despite this success, recent performance issues led to an abrupt end to what many fans saw as a promising tenure.
In a statement released by SEG Football, Ten Hag expressed gratitude towards both fans and staff for their unwavering support throughout his time with United. He also reflected on the silverware he had added to Old Trafford's trophy cabinet and shared that he had dreamed of adding more.
Erik ten Hag, Former Manchester United manager, said:
“Let me start by thanking you. Thank you for always being there for the club. Whether it was at a game far away or a tough match at Old Trafford, your support has been unshakeable. The atmosphere at Old Trafford has always been electrifying, thanks to you. I felt it many times. Also in away games, it gave the team and me an incredible feeling to hear the United chants taking over the opponents’ stadiums, whether the game was in England, Europe or during the summer tours.
“I always enjoyed meeting Manchester United fans throughout the world. Walking the streets and being able to chat with fans in England, Europe, Asia, Australia and the USA – you inspired me and radiated a strong sense of unity. That’s what makes United supporters so special. I want to thank you for giving me this feeling and for your support.”
Immediate aftermath
Following Ten Hag's departure announcement, he promptly returned to his hometown in Netherlands. His assistant and former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy stepped up as interim manager leading the side to an impressive 5-2 victory over Leicester City in Wednesday night's Carabao Cup match.
Van Nistelrooy will continue managing for three more games until Ruben Amorim officially takes over as head coach on November 11th.
Ruben Amorim takes charge
Ruben Amorim is set to join Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon where he recently led them to their first league title in nearly two decades. At just 39 years old, Amorim brings fresh energy and perspective into a team that is looking forward after recent setbacks under Ten Hag’s leadership.
The appointment of Ruben Amorim marks an exciting new chapter for Manchester United as they look ahead with optimism despite currently sitting mid-table in Premier League standings.
Erik ten Hag's departure from Manchester United marks the end of an era that saw both triumphs and challenges. As fans and players alike look forward to a new chapter under Ruben Amorim, Ten Hag's contributions to the club will not be forgotten. His tenure, marked by two significant trophy wins, leaves a legacy that sets a high bar for his successor.
