Five years ago, Konate made £35m move from RB Leipzig, and his current contract with the club is due for expiration this coming summer

Liverpool centre-back, Ibrahima Konate, has recently hinted that he is "close to an agreement" with the club over a new contract. This news comes as a relief for Liverpool fans who have been eagerly awaiting updates on his future at Anfield.

Konate joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig five years ago for £35m. His current deal is set to expire this summer, sparking speculation about his future with the Reds. However, speaking after Liverpool's Merseyside derby win on Sunday, the 26-year-old insisted that his future was never in doubt.

From the outset of negotiations with sporting director Richard Hughes, Konate expressed his desire to stay put at Anfield. He stated that there was a "big chance" he would remain with Liverpool next season.

Delayed process?

When asked why contract talks had dragged on until April, Konate referenced similar situations involving team-mates Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah last season. He suggested that this delay might be part of how the club operates when it comes to contract renewals.

Liverpool centre-back, Ibrahima Konate, said:

"There are many things people have said but for a long time we have spoken with the club and we are close to an agreement. I think everyone wished for that for as soon as possible but we are in a good way. For sure, there is a big chance that I'm here next season. This is what I've always wanted.

"I'm waiting to sort the contract but when everything is sorted you will have to ask Richard what I said to him in September, November before everyone talked about everything and he's going to say something to make everyone quiet.

"When he's going to reply, you will see. I just wish that."

Since joining Liverpool, Konate has made 113 Premier League appearances and played crucial roles in their victories. His contributions helped them secure the league title last season and bag both FA Cup and EFL Cup in 2022. However, this campaign has been personally challenging for him due to personal loss - his father passed away in France earlier this year. Despite being offered compassionate leave by the club due to these circumstances and ongoing defensive injuries within the team, he chose to return early showing dedication towards his role at Anfield.

Despite not winning any silverware this campaign season, Liverpool looks set for qualification into next season's Champions League. Currently, they are fifth in the Premier League standings, seven points clear of sixth-placed Chelsea. Konate's potential contract renewal is a positive development for Liverpool. His commitment to the club and his significant contributions on the field make him an invaluable asset as they look forward to another season of high-stakes football.
