Chelsea FC have come under fire following their decision to drop midfielder Enzo Fernández from the next two games. The move, which was confirmed by head coach Liam Rosenior on Friday, has been deemed "completely unfair" by Fernández's agent.
The sanction against Fernández comes after comments he made during an international break podcast. During the interview, the Argentine international expressed his desire to live in Madrid, sparking speculation about a potential move to Real Madrid. This is despite his contract with Chelsea extending until 2031.
Fernández's agent Javier Pastore voiced his client’s confusion over the club’s decision. He stated that Fernandez does not understand why expressing a personal preference for living location should result in such severe consequences.
Enzo Fernández's agent, Javier Pastore, said:
"The punishment is completely unfair. Banning the player for two matches, which moreover are also absolutely crucial for Chelsea because qualification for the Champions League is at stake and he is one of the team's most important players.
"There's no real reason or justification for why he has been banned. Enzo didn't understand the situation. When the coach told him he accepted it because he's a highly professional guy who's always fully committed wherever he is and respects decisions, but we don't understand the punishment because he doesn't mention any club or say he wants to leave Chelsea, far from it. He only mentions Madrid, the city. Our plan after the World Cup is to meet with Chelsea again and, if there is no agreement, to explore other options."
Uncertainty over future at Chelsea
This incident follows another controversial statement made by Fernandez earlier this year. After Chelsea’s Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in March, he admitted uncertainty over whether he would remain at Chelsea for the next season.
Rosenior confirmed that he was part of the club's decision-making process regarding this punishment and stood behind it despite criticism from Pastore and others within football circles.
Liam Rosenior, Chelsea manager, said:
"It's disappointing for Enzo to speak that way. I've got no bad words to say about him but a line was crossed in terms of our culture and what we want to build,"
"Enzo, firstly, as a character, a person and a player, I have the utmost respect. He's frustrated because he wants us to be successful. The door is not closed on Enzo. It's a sanction. You have to protect the culture, and in terms of that, a line was crossed."
Record signing retains vice-captaincy
Fernandez joined Chelsea for a then-British record £107million ($141 million) in 2023 and was appointed vice-captain just one year later due to his impressive performances and leadership qualities on and off the pitch.
Despite being dropped from upcoming matches against Port Vale in FA Cup quarterfinals and Manchester City in Premier League fixtures, Rosenior has confirmed that Fernandez will retain his vice-captaincy role within the team structure.
While there is controversy surrounding Fernandez’s recent comments about living preferences and future plans with Chelsea FC, the club has made its stance clear. The decision to drop him from upcoming games is a firm response, but his role as vice-captain remains secure. This situation serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between personal expression and professional obligations in the world of sports.
