Important message comes as English football awaits regulation changes

The Culture Media Sport Committee has issued a stern warning to sports clubs over the use of digital tokens to enhance fan engagement. The committee has expressed concerns over the volatility of these tokens and the potential exploitation of fans.

The committee's report highlighted the unique relationship between sports clubs and their fans, which could potentially be exploited through the sale of digital tokens. The government body has emphasised that clubs should not be allowed to sell these tokens to fans, as they are primarily a means to extract money from supporters who have unwavering loyalty to their clubs.

The report further detailed that the volatility of digital assets could pose an additional threat to the reputation of clubs, including Premier League teams, and their staunch loyalty from fans. This could lead to a situation where fans suffer due to the unpredictable nature of these digital assets.

Socios: A key player

The government report singled out Socios as a significant player among sports clubs that have taken advantage of this practice. Socios is a blockchain-based platform that allows sports clubs to issue their own digital tokens. These tokens can be used by fans to vote on club decisions, buy merchandise, and access exclusive content. However, the value of these tokens can fluctuate wildly, leading to potential financial losses for fans.

Committee chair Dame Caroline Dinenage said:

“In the world of sport, clubs are promoting volatile cryptoasset schemes to extract additional money from loyal supporters, often with promises of privileges and perks that fail to materialise.

“Fan token schemes must not be used as a substitute for meaningful engagement with supporters.”

Awaiting regulatory changes

This warning comes at a time when English football is awaiting a change in regulation. A new body is set to take over the framework that governs the sport. The UK Government recently released its latest response relating to the establishment of a new football regulator to protect the interests of clubs and fans, from the Premier League to the Championship and beyond.

In a public letter, the government stated that after extensive consultation with clubs and football authorities, all proposals for how the new football regulator should operate are still under review. This indicates that the government is taking a cautious approach to the regulation of digital tokens in sports, with the aim of protecting the interests of fans and clubs alike.

The use of digital tokens in sports clubs is a contentious issue, with potential benefits for fan engagement but also significant risks. The government's warning highlights the need for careful regulation to prevent exploitation and protect the interests of fans. As the sports world awaits regulatory changes, the debate over the use of digital tokens continues.
