Rosetti envisions all leagues using a unified "technical language" to reduce controversy and ensure consistent decision-making

Europe's top football leagues have been invited by UEFA to a summer summit aimed at discussing the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology. The meeting will focus on how VAR is being used across different leagues and the thresholds applied, with an aim to reset its application towards intervening only in clear errors.

Roberto Rosetti, head of UEFA's referees, initiated this call for a meeting following his statement last month that football should not "go in this direction of microscopic VAR interventions". This move comes amidst growing concerns over the inconsistent application of laws such as handball across different leagues.

Roberto Rosetti, head of UEFA referees, said:

"I believe that we forgot the reason why VAR was introduced,"

"In objective decisions, it is fantastic. For interpretations, subjective evaluation is more difficult. That's why we started to speak about clear and obvious mistakes - clear evidence."

Rosetti’s vision is for all leagues to speak "only one technical language", thereby ensuring uniformity in decision-making processes and reducing controversy surrounding decisions.

Varied use across Europe

The use and impact of VAR varies significantly across Europe. According to recent data, the Premier League has recorded the lowest rate of VAR intervention this season at 0.275 per game. However, this has not resulted in less controversy over decisions.

In comparison, Bundesliga and La Liga follow closely with 0.38 interventions per game each while Serie A records 0.44 interventions per game and Ligue 1 stands at 0.47 interventions per game. Interestingly, Champions League matches have seen a slightly higher rate than most domestic leagues with an average intervention rate standing at 0.45 per game. The upcoming summit aims to bring together referee chiefs from Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1 to discuss potential improvements in how they utilize VAR technology within their respective competitions.

It is hoped that these discussions could lead towards more universal approach regarding interpretation and implementation of laws as well as usage of VAR technology itself - thus ensuring fair play while minimizing controversies surrounding match outcomes. This meeting could be a significant step towards standardizing the use of VAR across different leagues, thereby enhancing the game's integrity and ensuring a level playing field for all teams irrespective of the league they play in.
