Gerard Pique, the former Spain and Barcelona defender, has been handed a six-match ban and a two-month suspension from official football activity by the Spanish football federation. This decision comes in the wake of an altercation with a referee during FC Andorra's match against Albacete.
The dispute occurred during FC Andorra's 1-0 defeat by Albacete last week. Pique, who retired from playing in 2022 and is now co-owner of FC Andorra, was quoted in referee Alonso de Ena Wolf's post-match report as saying to him: "leave with an escort so nobody attacks you" and "in another country they would beat you up, but here in Andorra we are a civilised country".
Disciplinary action
A disciplinary committee issued Pique's two-month ban for what it described as "notorious and public acts that undermine sporting dignity and decorum," based on the facts recorded in the referee's report. In addition to this suspension, the 39-year-old was also given a separate six-match ban for acts involving minor violence toward referees. Other members of Andorra’s staff were also implicated in this confrontation. Club president Ferran Vilaseca received a four-month suspension while Jaume Nogues, the sporting director was banned.
Despite these setbacks, FC Andorra currently holds its position at 10th place on the second division table. Pique boasts an illustrious career having won nine La Liga titles and three Champions League trophies with Barcelona. He also played pivotal roles in Spain’s World Cup victory in 2010 as well as their European Championship win two years later.
This recent incident marks one of few blemishes on his otherwise stellar record within football both as player and co-owner. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining decorum and respect in sports. It also underscores the responsibility that comes with being a figurehead within football, whether on or off the pitch.
