Tottenham Hotspur is reportedly in talks with Crystal Palace winger Eberechi Eze, potentially making him their marquee summer buy. The move comes as the club seeks to bolster its squad following a 17th-placed finish last season.
Despite their less than stellar performance in the league, Tottenham managed to rescue their season by clinching victory in the Europa League. This win secured them a spot in next season's Champions League. However, it became apparent that serious improvements are needed within the current crop of players at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium if they wish to avoid repeating this campaign’s performance.
One way Tottenham plans on improving their squad is by signing Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace.
Rising star
Eberechi Eze has been nothing short of sensational for Crystal Palace, contributing significantly to their record points haul and first-ever major trophy win. The attacking midfielder scored 14 times across all competitions last season, including six consecutive games towards the end of the campaign. His impressive form also saw him recording 11 assists.
Eze’s performances have not gone unnoticed with clubs across Europe listing him as a potential target this summer. Among these clubs is Spurs who could close a deal relatively quickly due to his £68 million release clause which activates this summer but ends two weeks before August concludes. However, Spurs face competition from other clubs including Manchester United, Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, Arsenal and Aston Villa who are all aware of his situation. Even Bayern Munich sees Eze as an alternative option should Florian Wirtz move on to Liverpool as expected.
Despite interest from other elite sides and his ambition to be heavily involved in England's squad at the 2026 World Cup; FourFourTwo reports that he isn't looking to force a move away from Crystal Palace. However, he is open to a move if it's from clubs competing in the Champions League.
Potential impact on Tottenham
For Tottenham, signing Eberechi Eze would signal their intent not to repeat last season's performance. He could immediately join the first team as an attacking midfielder or off the left-hand side, adding creativity and goals.
If Spurs can secure Eze before he signs a new contract with Crystal Palace and potentially offer player-plus-cash, it would be considered good business by Daniel Levy. However, they need to act quickly as Crystal Palace has already opened negotiations to extend Eze’s stay at Selhurst Park.
