Sweden's sports broadcasting landscape is set for a significant shift as Telia-owned TV4 and public-service broadcaster SVT have secured the rights to cover the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup (WWC). This development comes on the heels of Sweden's impressive performance at the previous WWC, where they reached the semi-finals.
The deal, announced on August 27th, will see both networks broadcast action from the tournament scheduled to take place in Brazil between June 24 and July 25. The upcoming WWC will be a historic event as it marks South America's first time hosting this prestigious tournament. With an expanded field of 32 teams, fans can expect an exciting competition filled with thrilling matches.
Previously, NENT (now rebranded as Viaplay streaming service) held exclusive rights to broadcast Women's World Cup games in Sweden. The last edition of this tournament took place across Australia and New Zealand in 2023. Despite losing out in the semi-finals to eventual winners Spain, Team Sweden made a strong comeback by securing third place against hosts Australia.
Joint rights deals
TV4 and SVT are no strangers to joint broadcasting deals. They have already collaborated on securing rights for other major football events such as men's FIFA World Cup slated for 2026 and UEFA men's European Championship due in 2028.
In addition to these collaborations, both broadcasters have independently showcased top-tier soccer tournaments too. For instance, during this year’s UEFA Women’s Euro held across Switzerland during July, SVT partnered with Viaplay to jointly cover the event. TV4 has also been instrumental domestically when it comes down to covering Swedish men’s top two divisions through a deal announced last October which runs through till the 2026-31 cycle. This move further cements TV4's commitment to providing comprehensive coverage of Swedish football.
The journey towards the 2027 WWC begins in earnest this November with the start of the European qualifying campaign. Comprising a league phase followed by playoffs, these matches will determine which teams secure their spots for the tournament in Brazil.
