The former Ajax and Inter number one has endured a torrid season at Old Trafford making lots of big mistakes

Manchester United fans flocked in their droves to X (formerly known as Twitter) at full time last night to vent their anger. Two more goalkeeping errors from Andre Onana gifted Lyon a 2-2 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter final and fans were quick to put the boot in.

First, he allowed a simple enough cross to squirm under his arms and into the bottom corner and then failed to deal with a routine shot, parrying the ball directly into the path of Rayan Cherki in the dying moments of the game to allow the French side to equalise.

The Cameroon international goalkeeper arrived to great fanfare in 2023 on the back of very successful stints at Ajax and Inter Milan, but since then, things have gone downhill fast.

While Onana is not the only problem at Old Trafford, far from it, he is becoming a lightning rod for dissatisfied supporters, especially online.

As coach Ruben Amorim looks to forge a new dawn at Man United, this summer could be the best time to do away with Onana and the toxicity he elicits from some sections of the support.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the regime may not want to spend too much money in the summer, but there are plenty of free agent options out there who could improve on Andre Onana.

New face or old friend?

Seeing Onana's poor performances this season, many United fans have been wondering why exactly the club decided to do away with David de Gea, who was, at the time, one of the best shot-stoppers in the world.

After a lengthy spell on the sidelines, considering his future, the 34-year-old signed a one-year deal with Serie A club Fiorentina. He has been pulling up trees in Florence this season and attracting a lot of attention.

A reunion with "Dave the Save" would surely be a welcome boost to morale at the club and still relatively young, de Gea has a lot to offer.

He may not be blessed with his feet, but assuming Amorim can work around that, he will offer a lot more in the way of shot-stopping, something which is sorely needed right now.

Another option from Serie A?

Italy international Alex Meret has played 27 of Napoli's 31 games so far this season in Serie A.

The 28-year-old has been a key part of Antonio Conte's title push in Naples, keeping 10 clean sheets during that time and attracting the attention of Arsenal and Man United themselves.

He'll be out of contract this summer, assuming Napoli are unable to tie him down in the interim, and he would likely be a significant improvement on Onana, while probably commanding less in wages.

United will have to act fast if they want to make the most of a move for Meret.

Time for an Argentine?

32-year-old Argentina international Walter Benitez will also be a free agent at the end of the season.

He was a key part of Peter Bosz's PSV Eindhoven side which won the Eredivisie last term, capping a fine couple of years in the Dutch top flight.

Before that, he impressed in Ligue 1 with Nice.

Benitez would be a left-field choice but one who would want very little in wages compared to the likes of Onana, and who could provide a bit more stability and experience.
