Television Jamaica (TVJ) has landed exclusive free-to-air broadcast rights for the highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup. This move will allow Jamaican soccer fans to enjoy comprehensive coverage of the tournament, including live matches and in-depth analysis.
The upcoming World Cup matches, set to take place between June 11 and July 19, will be hosted jointly by Mexico, the US, and Canada. TVJ is committed to providing extensive coverage throughout the expanded 48-team competition. Unfortunately, Jamaica's national team will not feature at this tournament after losing a decisive playoff last month against the Democratic Republic of Congo.
FIFA has been securing several late broadcast deals for this tournament with various broadcasters worldwide. Most recently these include state-owned Vietnam Television and South Africa's pay-TV operator SportyTV.
FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, said:
“FIFA is proud to be in its most solid financial position ever, enabling us to help all our Member Associations in an unprecedented way. This is one more example of how FIFA's resources are reinvested back into the game.”
Increased team payments by FIFA
In another significant development from FIFA's end, teams participating in the World Cup are set to receive increased payments totaling nearly $900 million. This increase is attributed to the commercial success of its expanded flagship men's tournament. The decision was approved during a meeting held by The FIFA Council in Vancouver ahead of their 76th congress. The total pot will rise to $871 million with each participating team receiving an increased preparation money amounting up to $2.5 million from an earlier sum of $1.5 million.
In addition to the increased preparation money, teams will also benefit from a rise in qualification money, which has been boosted from $9 million to $10 million. Furthermore, FIFA plans to provide additional contributions to teams. These include subsidies for delegation costs and an increase in ticketing allocations. The latter is expected to total more than $16 million, further enhancing the financial benefits for participating teams.
This increased distribution comes as part of preparations for what is expected to be one of history’s most commercially lucrative World Cups due largely because it features more teams and matches which bring expanded revenue opportunities across key areas like ticketing, sponsorship, and broadcast rights.
Other FIFA developments
In other news from the congress, FIFA announced that Miami, Florida will host the final phase of the 2027 Women’s Champions Cup club competition. The second edition of this four-team event is scheduled to take place from January 27 to 31 next year.
The inaugural Champions Cup was held earlier this year in London, where Arsenal defeated Corinthians to become the first winners of this prestigious tournament. This cup is seen as a precursor to a full Women's Club World Cup which FIFA plans to launch in 2028 and hold every four years.
FIFA also confirmed that Armenia and Georgia will co-host the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2029. Additionally, it was announced that Qatar would host the upcoming 2026 FIFA U-17 World Cup from November 19 to December 13 later this year.
