Manchester United fans have been left in awe of Lyon's young superstar, Rayan Cherki, following his impressive performance during the Europa League quarter-final second leg.
The 21-year-old winger showcased an unusual skill that caught the attention of former Man United defender and TNT Sports pundit Rio Ferdinand.
A stellar performance from Cherki
During the first half of the match against Ligue 1 side Lyon, Ferdinand noticed Cherki demonstrating a capability few can match. Despite United leading with a 2-0 score at halftime and being 4-2 up in the tie, it was clear that when Lyon were in attack mode, Cherki posed a significant threat both from open play and corner kicks.
The highly-rated youngster was taking set pieces from both sides of the pitch using either foot. This two-footed prowess left Ferdinand, who was on commentary duty for TNT Sports alongside Darren Fletcher and Robbie Savage, astounded.
Comparisons to players of the past
Ferdinand drew comparisons between Cherki's two-footed corner-taking ability to Nigel Quashie - a player known for his solid EFL and Premier League career despite having four relegations from top flight football under his belt.
However, as pointed out by Ferdinand himself, two-footed corner takers aren't as rare as one might think. Former Arsenal man Santi Cazorla also demonstrated this skill during his time with the club.
Allan McLeod - former Tooting & Mitcham United full-back - is another name often overlooked when discussing bipedal set-piece specialists.
Demand for young talent at United
Despite these comparisons to past players who never made it to the heights of being successful at a club like Manchester United, due to their quadrant exploits alone, there is no denying that Rayan Cherki is currently in form and high demand among fans.
With financial constraints expected to force Lyon into selling at a lower than desired price this summer, United fans have taken to social media to express their eagerness for the club to sign Cherki after his impressive Europa League performance tonight.
One fan suggested on X (formerly Twitter),:
"We should be speaking with Cherki's agent while this game is ongoing, and he should be signed for 20 mil before he's back on the plane home."
Others proposed swap deals or expressed excitement about potential team dynamics with Cherki onboard.
The young winger's corner chops were noted by fans too, with one X user posting:
"Cherki taking that corner with his right foot and finding a man knowing damn well he’s left footed. Kmt, I need this talent at my club."
Whether Manchester United will heed these calls remains to be seen. However, Rayan Cherki has clearly made an impression not only on Rio Ferdinand but also on many of the Red Devils' faithful supporters.
