Manchester City have formally presented Rodri with a contract offer that would extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium through to 2029, as the club take decisive action to retain their most important player amid sustained interest from Real Madrid.
The proposal carries a significant increase on the Spanish midfielder's current £220,000-per-week salary, with multiple reports placing the new terms above £300,000 per week and including an option to extend through to 2030. At 29, Rodri's current deal runs until June 2027, meaning City face the prospect of either agreeing fresh terms this summer or selling him rather than allowing him to leave for nothing next year.
Rodri's own comments raised concerns
The situation has attracted considerable attention since Rodri gave a radio interview on Spanish station Onda Cero in which he stated, "You cannot turn down the best clubs in the world" when asked about Real Madrid. The remarks generated significant concern among City supporters, though Rodri subsequently maintained that the comments had been taken out of context and that he remained happy at the club.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the position clearly. "Manchester City are already offering Rodri a new long-term contract. The decision is on Rodri — stay at Man City, sign a new contract, or leave this summer or in 2027 as a free agent."
Manchester City are understood to be confident the offer will ultimately be accepted, with sources inside the club briefing that Rodri has not rejected the proposal and is taking time to consider his options carefully. Real Madrid remain in the background but are reportedly unwilling to break their internal wage structure to sign a 29-year-old, even one of Rodri's calibre. With Bernardo Silva's departure already confirmed this summer, City are determined not to lose a second midfield leader in consecutive windows.
