Liverpool have intensified their interest in Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon following the confirmation that Hugo Ekitike will miss the start of next season with a ruptured Achilles tendon, with the club now accelerating summer recruitment plans across the entire forward line.
Ekitike's nine-to-twelve-month recovery timeline, combined with Mohamed Salah's confirmed June departure and Andy Robertson also leaving, means Liverpool are facing the most significant squad rebuild in over a decade. Manager Arne Slot must find solutions across multiple positions, with the attacking areas now representing the most urgent area of need.
Gordon back at the top of Liverpool's list
Sources have described Liverpool as being "firmly back in the frame" for Gordon, who can play across the front line and covers several positions the club urgently need to address. Newcastle's asking price stands at around £95 million, but with Salah's £535,000-per-week wages clearing the books in June, Liverpool have the financial capacity to make a move of that scale.
Addressing the media on Friday, Slot maintained a composed public stance on the scale of the challenge ahead.
Arne Slot, Liverpool manager, said:
"It is not as simple as people think it is. You always look at your squad for the short and long-term. This club is very focused on the long term."
Contract discussions with Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai are ongoing as Liverpool look to stabilise the core of the squad before the broader rebuild begins. Arsenal are also strongly pursuing Gordon and are currently considered the frontrunners by several reports, setting up what could be one of the most competitive transfer battles of the summer window.
