Luis Diaz, the Colombian forward for Liverpool, has subtly hinted at his future amidst ongoing transfer speculation. Despite being linked with a move away from Liverpool last season, he reported back to the AXA Training Centre for pre-season training on Sunday.
Diaz's future with Liverpool remains uncertain after it was revealed that a deal had been agreed upon between the Reds and Newcastle United for Anthony Gordon. However, this deal collapsed in June. Barcelona was frequently mentioned as a potential destination for Diaz during last season; however, no move has been made by the La Liga giants despite such speculation.
Instead of pursuing Diaz, Barcelona is currently working on signing Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig for £47.5m. As such, uncertainty continues to surround Diaz's future as it remains unclear whether any club will test Liverpool’s resolve before the transfer window closes on August 30.
The Reds' interest in Gordon and Gomez
Despite these uncertainties surrounding Diaz’s future at Anfield, Liverpool maintains strong interest in Anthony Gordon after seeing their £75m transfer fall through earlier this summer. This would have seen Joe Gomez join Newcastle in a separate £45m deal.
After helping Colombia reach the Copa America final last month, Luis Diaz returned to AXA Training Centre to start his pre-season training last weekend. Given ongoing speculation regarding his future when last season ended, fans wouldn't have been surprised if he had moved on before 2024/25 campaign started. However, with Premier League set to kick off soon - just over a week away - he is poised to make his return against either Sevilla or Las Palmas on Sunday in Reds’ final friendlies of summer.
Diaz offered an update from AXA Training Centre via Instagram post showing him both in the gym and out on the pitch, captioned: “Ready to new season” (sic), along with a lightning bolt and flexed arm emojis. This suggests that despite uncertainty about his future, he is eager to start Liverpool’s new campaign.
The pre-season tour and Carvalho's uncertain future
Diaz was absent for Reds’ pre-season tour of United States due to his international exploits during close-season. During this time, Fabio Carvalho lined up on left-wing for Reds’ three pre-season friendly wins over Real Betis, Arsenal and Manchester United in United States.
However, like Diaz, Carvalho's future is also uncertain after Liverpool rejected a verbal offer of £15m from Southampton. Despite expressing a desire to stay at Anfield previously, competition for places is steep. The attacking pecking order may become clearer when Diaz and Co. make their club playing returns against La Liga club on Sunday.
