Numerous firms, including Movistar Plus+, Mediapro and Egeda, joined the case as private prosecutors

Spanish football league, LaLiga, has recently announced a landmark court judgment against a criminal network that illegally distributed copyrighted content to over two million users across three continents. The Spanish National Court's decision represents an unprecedented blow against audiovisual piracy, with criminal convictions, damages and fines totalling more than €43 million.

The case was initiated years ago following an initial complaint by Nagravision and was propelled forward through the complaint and subsequent extension filed by LaLiga. This provided crucial purchase evidence for the verification of the facts.

The Criminal Chamber of the National Court handed down this record-breaking judgment for offences against market and consumers, intellectual property rights infringement, and money laundering. This ruling sets one of the largest compensation awards in Spain's history for an intellectual property offence.

Collaborative effort leads to victory

Several companies later joined the judicial proceedings as private prosecutors including Movistar Plus+, Mediapro and Egeda. The case concluded with defendants accepting joint accusations brought forth by both Public Prosecutor’s Office and private prosecutors.

Investigations were primarily conducted by Central Cybercrime Unit of Directorate General of Police along with Intellectual Property Group of Central Unit for Specialized Violent Crime (UDEV). International coordination was facilitated through Europol and Eurojust support.

Javier Tebas, LaLiga president, said:

“Audiovisual fraud is a scourge that threatens the survival of an industry that is fundamental to the European economy, namely live sport. We are proud of this exemplary sanction, which shows that piracy must be fought forcefully at every level, especially against the organisations and mafias behind it.”

Compensation breakdown & money laundering fines

The judgment mandates compensation worth €12 million for affected companies while imposing over €30 million in fines related to money laundering activities carried out by this illegal network.

This network operated under 'Dash, the Iranian' via channels such as rapidiptv.com, rapidiptv.net, iptvstack.com among others. They illegally distributed football broadcasts including LaLiga content along with films & series from servers located across 13 countries on three continents.

To launder their illicit earnings, the organization used payment gateways, cryptocurrency exchanges, shell companies and false invoices. Identified operations included construction of a residential building in Iran, purchase of a property in Barcelona valued at €1.7 million and acquisition of two high-end vehicles worth €400,000. The court's decision includes confiscation of all seized assets and funds along with permanent shutdown of the domains operated by this network. This landmark judgment serves as a stern warning to other potential offenders while reinforcing LaLiga's commitment to protecting its intellectual property rights.
