Despite Football Focus ending, BBC1 will maintain its Saturday football content with The Football Interview, currently a late-night show, moving to a 12:45pm slot

BBC Sport has announced the discontinuation of its long-standing show, Football Focus, after more than five decades on air. The decision comes as a response to changing audience behaviours and the evolving landscape of content consumption.

Football Focus first hit the screens in 1974, providing football enthusiasts with a rich blend of interviews, analysis and stories from across the game ahead of each weekend’s fixtures. However, as per BBC's recent statement, this season will be its last.

The corporation cited shifting audience behaviours as the primary reason for axing the show. It stated that fans are now increasingly consuming football content through digital platforms and on-demand viewing. This shift necessitates an appropriate response from BBC Sport to ensure optimal use of licence fee resources.

Adapting to changing viewing habits

As viewing habits continue to evolve rapidly in today's digital age, it is crucial for broadcasters like BBC Sport to adapt their approach accordingly. The aim is not just about maintaining relevance but also ensuring that they can deliver football coverage effectively across various mediums including television, radio and online platforms.

BBC Sport is currently expanding its digital content portfolio with plans for YouTube exclusives featuring new formats and talent. More details about these initiatives will be shared in due course. Despite this significant change in programming strategy at BBC Sport, former England international Alex Scott will continue her association with them. Currently serving as host for Football Focus, she will remain "at the heart" of corporation’s football content moving forward.

Scott's future engagements include working at FIFA World Cup matches this summer and covering events such as 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup along with ongoing coverage of Women’s Super League by BBC Sports. She will also reprise her role as one of this year’s hosts for the prestigious 'BBC Sports Personality Of The Year Awards'. Further collaborations with Scott will be announced in the upcoming months.

Football interview takes centre stage

While Football Focus may be ending, football content on BBC1 will continue to feature prominently on Saturdays. The Football Interview, which currently airs late on Saturday nights, is set to move to a 12:45pm slot.

Hosted by Kelly Somers, the show features interviews with football stars such as Bukayo Saka, Emma Hayes, Bernardo Silva and others. It is also available for viewing on iPlayer, YouTube and the BBC Sport website.

Additionally, Final Score hosted by Jason Mohammad will now air at 3:45pm covering each Saturday afternoon’s football fixtures live as they happen. While it's an end of an era for Football Focus fans after over half a century of broadcasts; BBC Sport's commitment towards delivering quality football content remains unwavering amidst changing audience preferences and evolving digital landscapes.
